Almost 80,000 outdated general waste wheelie bin lids will be replaced starting next month.
There are currently three different coloured lids on general waste wheelie bins in Brisbane – dark green, grey and red.
Kerbside wheelie bins were introduced in Brisbane in 1984 with the red top lids introduced in 2011.
Around 17 per cent of bins still have a dark green or dark grey lid.
From 1 April an estimated 77,000 outdated general waste bin lids will be replaced with a red lid.
The bin lid changeover project is 100 per cent funded by the Queensland Government.
Consistency in bin lid colours is also part of the Australian Government’s National Kerbside Collections Roadmap.
Consistency in colours will increase visibility for drivers completing collection and deliver efficient collections for residents.
Removed old lids will be melted down to produce new bins.
Residents with a dark green of grey bin lid will have their lid replaced with a new red lid while their bin is on the kerb as part of their regular collection day.
The lid changeover project will run from 1 April to the end of June 2025.
