Students Honour Veterans with Heartfelt ANZAC Day Postcards
One of the most moving parts of ANZAC Day is seeing younger generations learning the stories, traditions, and sacrifices that helped shape our country and this year, students from Jamboree Heights State School and Darra State School did exactly that in a very special way.
As part of a community initiative, students created heartfelt postcards for local veterans to show their appreciation for Australia’s servicemen and women. The project gave students the opportunity to learn more about the history and significance of ANZAC Day, with veterans visiting the schools to share their personal experiences and stories of service.
The postcard exchange also reflected an important tradition from World War I, when soldiers regularly sent messages home to loved ones while serving overseas.
Our local Darra RSL President Grant Hartigan, an Iraq veteran himself, featured in the ABC story, describing the postcards as a “tangible token of gratitude” that carries real emotional weight for those who receive them. Watch the story here.
Completed postcards were delivered to the Darra District RSL, Centenary Suburbs RSL, Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL, a local nursing home, and individual veterans in our community. The ANZAC spirit is alive and well, and our next generation is carrying it forward. Lest we forget.
