Planting for Platypus
Wolston and Centenary Catchments (WaCC) is inviting local residents, families and nature lovers to come together for a special community planting event aimed at improving habitat for one of Australia's most iconic native species, the platypus.
The Planting for Platypus Community Day will be held on Sunday, 11 October 2026, from 8:00am to 12:00pm at Spine Street Park, 15 Wolston Road, Sumner.
This family-friendly event will help restore vital riverbank vegetation by planting 2,000 native seedlings along the catchment. Healthy riparian vegetation plays an important role in improving water quality, reducing erosion and creating habitat for local wildlife, including platypus.
The morning will begin with a Welcome to Country and Didgeridoo Performance at 8:00am, followed by community planting activities from 9:00am to 10:00am.
There will be plenty of opportunities for the whole family to get involved and enjoy the day, with:
Free coffee
Free ice cream
Free sausage sizzle
A free wildlife show featuring a koala
Family-friendly environmental activities
All planting tools and gloves will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own gardening gloves if available.
Attendees should wear enclosed footwear, sun-safe clothing and a hat, and bring a water bottle. Children are welcome but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
This event is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council and funded through the Australian Government's Natural Heritage Trust Urban Rivers and Catchments Program.
