Recently I visited local Sumner business, Sulo, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, to announce a trial to manufacture household wheelie bins using more recycled materials. Currently, Brisbane bins contain 40% recycled material, but the trial aims to increase it to 60% and eventually 100%.
The initiative aligns with our commitment to being a clean, green, and sustainable city. By encouraging recycling and reducing the production of new plastic, the trial could have a positive impact on the environment. Shredded material from damaged wheelie bins, as well as common household plastics, are being tested for use in bin production.
If successful, every new Brisbane bin could be made entirely from materials collected through recycling efforts. This commitment will also support local jobs right here in Sumner.
